Lucky Star Farm
We’re located alongside the Rapidan River in the roiling hills of Culpeper, Virginia.
We started our first herd of cattle in New England more than twenty years ago, beginning with a small group of Scottish Highlands. During the first fifteen years, we accumulated females from some of the best bloodlines in the breed. After twenty-three years, we’ve established a breeding-stock, production herd that’s built around two established cow families. In addition to that, we maintain a bull line that goes back four generations to our foundation herd sire, Atwood’s Campbell.
In 2016, with the need for more land and a desire to live in a warmer climate, we relocated the farm to Virginia. The following year, we sought to diversify our breeding operation and began to build a herd of Registered Herefords. We started with females of all ages from two of Virginia’s oldest breeders, along with some select, young cows from newer bloodlines. Our foundation herdsire was sired by TH 122 711 VICTOR 719T an important bull in the Hereford breed. He gave us several magnificent heifers that have since become reliable dams in our cow herd. We continue to improve the cow herd by adding select heifers from time-to-time and after six seasons, we’re running our third herdsire, SRM 1417 WARRIOR 1807 ET. Warrior carries nearly all of the most sought-after genetic traits in the breed.
2022 was a big year for us. In order to diversify production within the Scottish Highland herd, we added a Registered British White Park bull. As a result, our first calving season for the High-Park cross began in November and we’ve been very excited to see these calves thriving in some of the harshest, winter conditions Virginia has had in over 100 years.
Last year, we further diversified our operations by adding Registered Texas Longhorns to the farm. We were invited to attend the Cherry Blossom Sale in April and unexpectedly came home with RIDE SALLY RIDE, a lovely young heifer sired by the late TCC HOUDINI. She was the last lot in the sale. Before the end of the year, our Longhorn herd grew to thirteen head, including foundation sire ACE COWBOY, twin heifers out of DD RED CHECKER and a few females and calves we picked-up at the East Coast Classic in the fall.
With three breeds of cattle and three senior bulls on the Lucky Star this year, we’re increasing the number of bull calves we raise and market as breeding stock. Look for us to have breeding-age bulls available at all times of the year.
